Senator Evans Reacts to Susan G. Komen National Actions Against Planned Parenthood

Sacramento- Senator Noreen Evans (D-Santa Rosa), chair of the Legislative Women’s Caucus, today issued the following statement on Susan G. Komen for the Cure national action to end funding for health services to women through Planned Parenthood affiliates:

“As chair of the Legislative Women’s Caucus I have always stood in solidarity with Susan G. Komen for the Cure and admired the benefits the organization has provided for access to healthcare for women of all income levels.  In the past, Susan G. Komen for the Cure provided support and camaraderie to survivors and surviving family members; they provide resources for prevention so that no women suffers unnecessarily, and most importantly – they raise awareness about a disease that for so long went unmentioned and untreated. In fact, last year I was named Legislator of the Year by the Susan G. Komen for the Cure California Collaborative.”

“While it pains me to do so, Susan G. Komen for the Cure’s action to eliminate funding for Planned Parenthood health care centers forces me to reevaluate my relationship and support of Susan G. Komen for the Cure.

“In the past, Susan G. Komen for the Cure funding has enabled many Planned Parenthood health centers to provide women with breast health education, screenings, and referrals for mammograms — lifesaving care for women whose only source of health care is Planned Parenthood.  It should be noted that Planned Parenthood spends 97 percent of their resources on preventative health services – not abortions.  The missions of the two organizations are so intertwined it defies logic that Susan G. Komen for the Cure would sever its relationship with Planned Parenthood and deny the most disadvantaged women the critical care they need.

“Under my leadership, the bipartisan Legislative Women’s Caucus, has held an annual bake sale at the Capitol to support Susan G. Komen for the Cure.  However, given this alarming and disturbing event, we have canceled our annual Bake for the Cure event and will not be co-sponsoring their March event to Light the Capitol Pink as we have in past years.

“I am frustrated, angered, and offended that Susan G. Komen for the Cure let a radical political viewpoint withdraw its support for women’s health care.  I am hopeful they will reconsider their draconian move and fund Planned Parenthood throughout the nation.”

State Senator Noreen Evans represents the Second Senatorial District, including all or portions of the Counties of Humboldt, Lake, Mendocino, Napa, Solano, and Sonoma. Senator Evans Chairs the Legislative Women’s Caucus and the Committee on Judiciary.
