McGuire Appointed to Senate Leadership Team, Will Chair Human Services and Joint Fisheries Committees

Sacramento, CA – The President of the California State Senate, Kevin de Leon, announced that Senator Mike McGuire will join the Senate’s leadership team.

In just his fourth week on the job, it was announced that McGuire was selected to become vice-chair of the Senate Democratic Caucus and Chair of both the Human Services Committee and the Joint Committee on Fisheries and Aquaculture.

“I’m grateful and excited to be asked to be on the Senate Leadership team - this is a tremendous honor,” said McGuire, “and I am looking forward to getting to work and chairing both the Human Services Committee and the Joint Committee on Fisheries and Aquaculture.”

McGuire served on the Sonoma County Board of Supervisors and as Mayor and School Board President in the city of Healdsburg.  He is the youngest member of the State Senate, at age 35.

McGuire has extensive experience in both human services and fisheries issues from his time on the Board of Supervisors when he worked with local, state and federal agencies on numerous issues related to both of these important topics.

The Senate Human Services Committee oversees all state programs relating to Cal Fresh and the State's Nutrition Assistance Programs, Child Welfare, senior care, social and rehabilitation services, drug and alcohol programming, the State's Developmental and Regional Centers, foster care and much more.

The Joint Committee on Fisheries and Aquaculture has been the legislative nexus for fishery issues for more than forty years, and has been the source of many successful legislative and administrative remedies for the North Coast and California as a whole. Past Chairs include former Assemblymembers Wes Chesbro and Patty Berg as well as former Senator Mike Thompson.
