Sacramento, CA –  Earlier this year, Senator Mike McGuire introduced The Rural Safety and Clean Air Act (SB 523), which would invest $5 million per year  to replace aging school buses in rural school districts. Working collaboratively with the California Air Resources Board, the $5 million was approved today and will be allocated to rural school districts to replace old and polluting school buses through a grant process starting in mid-2016.

Sacramento, CA – Senator Mike McGuire’s bill to protect the tallest trees on the planet – old growth redwoods – from burl poachers received a unanimous vote of support from the Senate last week.

Burls are the dormant, knobby materials that grow at the base of the tree’s trunk allowing the old growth redwood to grow new saplings, which is vital to the health of California’s forests. Poachers have been targeting these burls at increasing rates in California’s State and National Parks.

Sacramento, CA – Yesterday’s oil spill in the once pristine waters off Santa Barbara County’s Refugio State Beach is a grim reminder of just how risky coastal oil development can be. 

Local environmental and state agencies along with emergency crews, have sprung into immediate action to limit the damage from an estimated 21,000 gallons of oil that spilled from a ruptured pipeline, draining crude oil for three hours and creating nine miles of toxic sheen in ocean waters.

Sacramento, CA – With a broad show of support, Senator Mike McGuire’s Online Vacation Rental legislation, SB 593 was again approved Wednesday by a second Senate committee with a 4-2 vote from members of the Governance and Finance Committee.

Last month, SB 593 was also approved with a unanimous vote in the Senate Transportation and Housing Committee. After approval today, Senator McGuire’s critical legislation regulating Online Vacation Rental Businesses will now proceed to the Senate floor for a vote.

Sacramento, CA – Senator Mike McGuire’s bill to forever protect California’s coast from new offshore oil development in state waters passed with a sweeping vote of support from the Senate Natural Resources Committee Tuesday afternoon.

SB 788 – The Coastal Protection Act – will close the loophole in the Coastal Sanctuary Act that currently would allow the State Lands Commission to grant new leases for offshore oil and gas development. New offshore oil leases are a real possibility in California and developers are already testing the political waters.
