SB 1287 will protect whales from lost or abandoned crab gear

Sacramento, CA – A record number of whales are suffering from entanglements in California waters – 2015 saw 57 whales entangled off our coast, which is the highest total since the National Marine Fisheries Service started keeping records in 1982. Just in the first half of this year alone, there were another 40 reports of entangled whales off California’s coast. Many of these whales are becoming entangled in lost or abandoned crab fishing gear.

Sacramento, CA – With word of potentially dangerous closures of three skilled nursing facilities in the greater Humboldt Bay region, Senator Mike McGuire is urging the state Department of Public Health to reject Rockport Management's closure plan. McGuire is spending the week meeting with several stakeholder groups to work on solutions, both short term and long term.

Sacramento, CA – After months of delay, the audit Senator Mike McGuire and the Senate Human Services Committee requested over a year ago, which focused on dangerous over-prescribing patterns in California’s foster care system, was released today. The document states that the state and counties have “failed to oversee the prescribing of psych meds in the foster care system” and it disclosed a system-wide failure regarding the tracking of psychotropic medication patterns, which has put the health and safety of thousands of California’s foster youth at risk.

Sacramento, CA – With a unanimous show of support in the Assembly Thursday, Senator Mike McGuire’s bill that will assist rural counties by again requiring the State to fund Payment in Lieu of Taxes (PILT) reimbursements to counties will now head to Governor Brown’s desk for his signature.

In fact, support for the bill was so strong in the legislature that it was approved by all Senate committees, Assembly committees and both houses without receiving any votes in opposition.

Sacramento, CA – Senator Mike McGuire today shepherded legislation on the Senate Floor to put a measure on the November ballot that will make theft of a firearm a felony regardless of the value of the gun. This legislation became necessary when Prop 47 made it only a misdemeanor when handguns, shotguns, rifles and AR-15 types of weapons, which are easy to find for sale under $950 at most retail gun stores, are stolen.
