Sacramento, CA – Senator Mike McGuire is proud to announce that North Coast Opportunities (NCO) – an incredible organization serving Mendocino and Lake county communities that led individual recovery and donation distribution efforts after last year’s Redwood Complex and Sulphur fires – has been chosen as the North Coast’s Nonprofit of the year. 

“For 50 years, North Coast Opportunities has delivered positive change to countless lives and they have been tirelessly working on behalf of the 2,000 families in Lake and Mendocino counties who lost their homes to the Jerusalem, Valley, Clayton and Redwood Complex Fires,” Senator Mike McGuire said. “NCO has an incredible history of service to the community, and we are honored to recognize NCO and their team as the North Coast’s Nonprofit of the Year.”

Devastating wildfires have swept through Mendocino and Lake Counties over the past four years and NCO has served as the critical link for fire survivors, connecting them to desperately needed relief funds donated from various sources. They also serve thousands of people each year through a diverse range of projects spanning from volunteerism, disaster relief, childcare and development, food-sustainability, nutrition, and food security.

This August will also mark 50 years of NCO’s commitment to Northern California. The organization has shown, time and time again, that community comes first.

“It’s been a privilege to serve our neighbors who have been in such need since the Fires. We are so proud of our team who have stepped up to fulfill our ongoing mission and invest millions into the community through our fire recovery programs, said NCO Executive Director Patty Bruder. “We thank Senator McGuire and the neighbors we serve for their ongoing support and we will continue to work hard to help our communities recover and rebuild.”

NCO also co-established and runs the Mendocino Fire Resource Room for fire survivors seeking information, help, and guidance. They provide case management for recovery planning, application assistance, and resource navigation.

Through community collaboration NCO makes a difference in the lives of the people they serve.

Bruder and NCO Board Chair Ross Walker joined Senator McGuire at the State Capitol Wednesday for a special ceremony in recognition of nonprofits across the state that have been chosen to represent their districts for California Nonprofits Day.
