Senate Leader McGuire, Senator Wiener Recognize Legendary Giants Announcer Renel Brooks-Moon on the Senate Floor
SACRAMENTO – Senate President pro Tempore Mike McGuire (D-North Coast), Senator Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco) and several Bay Area Senators honored legendary, longtime Giants public address announcer Renel Brooks-Moon on the Senate Floor with a Senate Resolution on Monday. The resolution commended her for a legacy of work that inspired baseball fans and Californians.
“For nearly a quarter century, Renel Brooks-Moon has been a fixture at Oracle Park. Announcing more than 2,000 games, including three World Series Championships, her voice brought incredible excitement and emotion to the game of baseball,” Pro Tem McGuire said. “For those of us listening, she brought the game to life. But her storied career and community impact extends beyond the ballpark. As one of the first Black women to serve as an announcer in MLB history, she broke barriers and made history – and she continues to empower and uplift the community. As a diehard Giants fan – and growing up listening to Renel on KMEL and KISS – the State Senate says thank you for your unwavering commitment to the Golden State. The Bay Area is stronger because of her work.”
“Today we honor an icon in the truest sense of the word,” Wiener said. “For two and a half decades, Renel Brooks-Moon defined the Giants game experience for millions of San Franciscans. Her voice broke barriers at a time when few Black women served as announcers, and her example uplifted and inspired the entire community. I’m thrilled to see a San Francisco legend get the recognition she so richly deserves.”
Renel Brooks-Moon is a Bay Area native, and served as Public Address Announcer for the San Francisco Giants for 24 seasons. She is a graduate of Woodside High School, and received a B.A. in English Literature from Mills College. Brooks-Moon spent 35 years as a radio and television broadcaster, including leading roles at 106 KMEL, 98.1 KISS-FM and CBS-5. She was recognized by the Baseball Hall of Fame as the first woman to Public Address Announce a world championship game in any professional sport, following Game 3 of the 2002 World Series. Brooks-Moon has received numerous awards, including honors from American Women in Radio and Television, Multi-Ethnic Sports Hall of Fame, 100 Black Women, Bay Area Black Journalists Association, Girl Scouts of NorCal, and Girls, Inc.
“I am profoundly honored and humbled to receive this recognition,” Brooks-Moon said. “Today is dedicated to my parents, Juanita and Nathaniel Brooks, who was San Francisco’s first black high school principal. They were the best parents and role models ever. I wish they were here to witness this, but I know they are with me today. My heart is filled with gratitude and appreciation.”
