Senate Leader McGuire Hosts 50th Annual Zeke Grader Fisheries Forum Focused on California Salmon, Dungeness Crab and Other Top-Tier Fisheries and Issues

SACRAMENTO – Senate Leader Mike McGuire (D-North Coast), Chair of the Joint Committee on Fisheries and Aquaculture and Vice-Chair, Assemblymember Diane Papan (D-San Mateo) will host the 50th Annual Zeke Grader Fisheries Forum TOMORROW (Wednesday). This year’s forum will focus on the challenges facing salmon and kelp, there will be a discussion on the hot water blob that’s formed in the Pacific, along with an examination of the outlook for the upcoming Dungeness crab season in California.

Both the salmon and Dungeness crab fishery have been challenged in recent years, which has led to devastating economic impacts in Northern California coastal communities.

“For 50 years, the Zeke Grader Fisheries Forum has brought the leaders of California’s iconic fishing industry together to focus on the current challenges and how we can work together to create more opportunities ensuring the fleet, rural coastal economies and the environment can thrive,” Pro Tem McGuire said. "Protecting and preserving our state’s fisheries and aquaculture industry is vital to this state and we look forward to a robust discussion on the critical issues the industry faces, now and into the future."

Attendees of the Zeke Grader Fisheries Forum will hear the latest data and observations from a wide spectrum of stakeholders and experts – from state and Tribal leaders, representatives of the commercial fishing fleet, scientists and environmental leaders. The presenters will submit annual reports on their needs, goals, and accomplishments that will help guide future fisheries and aquaculture policies.

The forum begins at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 1st in the State Capitol Swing Space, 1021 O Street, Room 2200.

The forum is open to the public and will also be live streamed on the Senate website: http://senate.ca.gov/. For more information, visit the Joint Committee Fisheries and Aquaculture Committee website at: http://fisheries.legislature.ca.gov/
